Below is an account of the tourney for the open squad. A perspective from the women's team will hopefully be forthcoming. After Day 1, the boys astounded the competition by winning it's pool with a record of 4-0. In spite of a small roster of 12 bodies and having never played in any tourney together, DKUT surprised its opponents with a formula of gritty play and balls out defense. DKUT first faced Queens and overcame a 9-3 deficit to score 8 consecutive defensive breaks to win the second half 12-2, en route to a 15-10 come-from-behind victory. The second game was against the defending 3-time national championship team from UofT which featured a core of GOAT players. DKUT got the first break and then exchanged points to take the first half 8-7, and then continued to grind out the game to a 10-7 win. DKUT then went on to play a similarly gritty team from University de Montreal, and won 13-8. The day ended with a more relaxed victory against McGill B, who were only able to score 2 points against an fatigued DKUT. Day 2 would bring tougher competition in power-pool play. Fortunately DKUT would have the reinforcements of 4 more bodies who were unable to make it for Day 1. DKUT played a tight game against UQAM (a team which had notable Mephisto stars), and squeaked out with a 12-10 win. In another closely fought game, DKUT outlasted UofOttawa, 13-8. The day finally ended with a disappointingly poor performance and a loss against an 8-man-roster UBC team. A three-way tie for first in the powerpool would see DKUT ending up 3rd in the +/- pointspread, setting up a quarterfinal against Carleton. DKUT started off Day 3 slow out of the gates and were unable to claw back in an intense and chippy quarterfinal game, resulting in a tough loss to the eventual champions, Carleton. With 5th place being the best possible result, DKUT took out their anger on Waterloo and dispatched of them easily. Unfortunately the exhausted DKUT squad ran out of steam and lost in a tight game for 5th place against a young and energetic team from the University of Guelph. Entering as the 10th seed, DKUT would end CUUC '09 with a final record of 7-3, and a 6th place finish. For full UPA score reporter tournament results: DKUT Open and DKUT Women |
